James Ralph Morgan Bristol Artist portrait by Chris Shopland oil pastel on A3 29.7 x 42cm paper
James is an amazing portrait artist (among many other subjects), so attempting this piece felt a little daunting. I first came across his work at Ropewalk and loved it instantly—but it wasn’t until many years later that I got to know him properly at North Street Gallery. The art world really is a small one.
James himself is a laid-back, easygoing sort—often the case with artists whose work is so intense and vivid. This portrait isn’t an exact likeness (not at all, really), but it was fun to create. I love the boldness of it, especially since I used oil pastels—something I don’t pick up very often, but always enjoy when I do.
